Building Village Women’s Confidence Through a Fashion Show
What happened when mothers, who were usually far from the hubbub of the city, walked in style on the catwalk? What happens when, beforehand, they had never had a similar experience? It turned out that it was done by 23 women assisted by the Wahid Foundation. Not inferior to real models, they participated in the Modest Wear Fashion Show which was a series of events from the Peace Festival (February 9-11, 2018) at Gandaria City Mall.
Their happiness was evident on their faces. Physical appearance and clothing were not the main criteria in the event run by the Wahid Foundation. Moreover, these great women are the peacemakers in the village, certainly the main assessment is how the participants understand and interpret peace.
Some women seemed nervous about answering questions but overall they performed well. Of course, there must be a winner in every competition and the judges decided Qoriatul Azizah from Sidomulyo Village as the first winner.
Her answer to the contribution of empowerment to farmer groups in her area attracted the judges, consisting of Amy Atmanto (fashion designer), Ai Syafri (fashion designer and representative of Femina Group), Olga Lydia (artist and model), and Nia Dinata (film producer).
Women's empowerment is one of the pillars of the Peace Village program besides economic empowerment and peacebuilding. "Providing space for women to express themselves so that they can increase their self-confidence is one form of empowering women," explained Visna Vulovik, Assistant Director of the Wahid Foundation.
Organizing a fashion show in one of the biggest malls in Jakarta with competent judges will surely provide an amazing experience for women who usually only struggle in the fields, make snacks, or take care of children.
This competition is indeed not only a matter of losing and winning but also learning for the women. Even before the D-day, the participants received training on how to walk on the catwalk and were taught about the formation on the stage. The women were very enthusiastic, as evidenced when the program was over, they asked when a similar event would be held again? Wait for the date!
