New Maneuvers and Antidotes to Intolerance

The book launch of the Standard Operating Procedures of 9 Indicators for Peace Villages/Kelurahans, conducted on Friday (2/8) at The Sultan Hotel and Residence Jakarta, left a strong impression and message.

There are dreams and hopes that absolutely need to be continued and expanded regarding the existence of the Peace Villages. As stated by the Executive Director of the Wahid Foundation, Mujtaba Hamdi, "maneuvers" to counteract intolerance have been formulated in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of 9 Indicators for Peace Villages/Kelurahans and just need to be practiced. "This book can be a reference for other regions in adopting the concept of peace, because if the SOPs of 9 Indicators for Peace Villages/Kelurahans widely impacts the community, peace can cover all the joints of the community meaning the people are empowered and the state is successful," he explained in a talk show held in the event.

Mujtaba added that this SOPs also clearly place local wisdom as an important indicator so that it can be adapted to the sociocultural context in each region and village.

In line with what was conveyed by Mujtaba, the Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo, who was present at the event, also said that the true concept of Peace Village is easily adopted by other villages because almost all villages had mutual cooperation and tolerance values. "But if the values of mutual cooperation and tolerance are not maintained, the village might lose its beauty," Ganjar explained.

Andhika Chrisnayudhanto, Director of Regional and Multilateral Cooperation. National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT), and Riri Khariroh, Commissioner of National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), were also the speakers in the talk show titled the Village Women's Movement in Preventing Intolerance and Radicalism through Economic Strengthening at the Grassroots Level.

"When women are empowered and economically independent, women have more resilience in dealing with problems and have bargaining power in the households and communities," Riri said.

Ethnic and cultural ambience became the main theme of the event. The event commenced with the poetry reading by eight Malang Youth Camp female alumni and the Genderang Langit dance by Soka Gakkai Indonesia. The NUSANTARA event also presented Eko Putro Sandjojo, the Minister of Villages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration; Sabine Machl, Representative of UN Women, and Yenny Wahid, Co-Founder of the Wahid Foundation.

"The Peace Village program has reached 2,121 women empowered through economic and entrepreneurship program at the village or kelurahan level. In addition, the village community also received training and strengthening on the values of tolerance and peace, how to deal with hoaxes and potential conflicts. In short, the Peace Village/Kelurahan program is expected to be one of the 'antidotes' to intolerance and radicalism," Yenny Wahid expressed her hope.
